My first ever tattoo. I just got it today (January 3rd 2011) as a late 19th birthday present.

This is the horde symbol from World of Warcraft. This game has been a part of my life during some really rough times, as silly as that may sound. When things got crazy, I’d escape to my fantasy world so I could be some bad ass when in reality I was depressed and flunking out of school thanks to finally coming out about my 9 years of abuse. This is my representation of how rough those times were but how I managed to get past it all anyway with a smile on my face and a wand in my hand. It’s my symbol of strength, nerd-dom, and bad assery.

Always been a fan of Lord of the Rings. This is the verse of the poeme, in Black Speech “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them”.

The other one, on the ribs, half visible, is a Gorky quote, in Tengwar, meaning this : “Happiness always looks small while you hold it in your hands, but let it go, and you learn at once how big and precious it is.”

I thought I would go ahead and submit this tattoo, since it sort of goes with my ongoing “resolution”. The tattoo was done by Myles Karr in Brooklyn.

The reason I got it was Aldous Huxley’s “The Island”, which is a utopian novel. In the novel, Mynah birds fly around singing out “Attention Attention!”:

“But why did they teach him those things? Why ‘Attention’? Why ‘Here and now’?” “Well …That’s what you always forget, isn’t it? I mean, you forget to pay attention to what’s happening. And that’s the same as not being here and now.” “And the mynahs fly about reminding you—is that it?”

AND

“Attention,” the mynah bird began to call again from the other side of the house. “Attention.” Will shook his head. “Attention to what?” “To this.” And she dug her nails into the skin of his forehead. “‘This. Here and now. And it isn’t anything so romantic as suffering and pain. It’s just the feel of fingernails. And even if it were much worse, it couldn’t possibly be forever or to infinity. Nothing is forever, nothing is to infinity.

I got a blue jay for my grandfather who passed away from cancer when I was 9. I never knew my father, so he was the closest I ever had to a “real dad”. I was as devastated as a 9 year old could be. The week he died, I bought him a bookmark with a poem written on it and a blue jay pinned to it. (I have no idea why I bought him a bookmark, that’s just what I wanted to get him.) At his funeral, I pinned the blue jay pin on his suit and he was buried in it. It just felt perfect to get the tattoo. Now, every time I see it or think about it, it brings back good memories of him. Rest in peace, Papa.
